How to recognize error message codes of each system, and what are the differences? Technological development of BMW was so far ahead of OBD-II standard, its (OBD) usage was many steps back.Īccordingly: diagnostic equipment, which supports OBD-II, will see the error messages of this system (OBD-II) equipment, who “understands” EDIABAS, will work with EDIABAS system data. Yes, OBD-II intends implementations: each car manufacturer can improve the standard error message list with their own, unique codes, but in BMW case – it was not a solution. In their evaluation level, the BMW cars were and also now exceed possibilities, intended by OBD-II. Why one more, independent system would be necessary? It’s clear, why OBD-II system should be available – it’s required by the standard.
Initially, the process was chaotic – each car manufacturer introduced his own, completely different standard. It was a logical process – equipment can get damaged, they have to be repaired. One of the things, regarding which I was very surprised – most BMW users are reading the error messages… Completely incorrect! How so?Ī long time ago, as soon as electronic devices appeared in cars, manufacturers started to introduce self-diagnostics and diagnostics possibilities. So I’m very surprised when it turns out – not everything is as I have imagined. Hopefully someone have some knowledge about this problem.I’m interested in BMW cars for already 25 years, and quite many things are self-evident for me. The car is a BMW 523 iA Touring, july-1998, high IKE. I have tried disconnecting the abs, navigation, telephone, ags and the AC (ihka) control modules, but to no avail. When browsing different forums, faulty controlunits jamming the bus has been one of the most frequent causes, ground problems as well.Įverything works on my car, so the i-bus, k-bus etc can't be totally jammed or blocked. Using carsoft 6.5 and bmw scanner 1.35, it all works fine.?!? Obviously something is jamming or shorting the bus when the key is in position-2, but so far i haven't been able to pinpoint it. I have tested the modic-3 on other cars successfully, so the problem must be on the diagnose bus in my car.
However, when turning the ignition on and off again, lots of modules can be found, but not the DME, AGS and a few more.Īnd, when starting the diagnose, the modic can't identify the car automaticly. Using my modic-3, i can't find any control modules what so ever, when the ignition is on (data transmission disturbed).
